Sand Camp is a remote camping site located on the Smith River, in close proximity to the Redwoods National and State Parks. There is nothing better than pulling up in our truck camper, and having the whole place to explore on our own. An added benefit is that this spot is free. Many of the campsites in the Redwood area charge quite a bit, and you are packed in like sardines on the sites. We found out about Sand Camp though the very helpful FreeCampsites.Net.
Sand Camp has a large gravel area for RV and vehicle camping. A pit toilet is also available in the parking lot, but don’t count on toilet paper. A trail leads to multiple tent camping sites. The tent sites are all a good size, but we did see some trash leftover in some of the firepits. Of course, this is not ideal for a camping area well known for the bears that inhabit the area. It is a pack it in, pack it out campsite with no trash cans. Keep in mind, there is typically no cell phone service in this area.
The highlight of Sand Camp is undoubtedly the Smith River. The clear, shallow waters are just absolutely beautiful. The backdrop of the cliffs, and trees provides a serene landscape. There are a few areas you can walk along the river, and explore the area. There are birds everywhere, and you can see small fish through the transparent waters. We had the pleasure of watching a family of otters swimming upstream. If you can stand the brisk waters, this is a nice swimming area as well. Sand Camp is a great spot to enjoy the evening after a day of hiking the Redwood trails in the area.
